Facebook Rebrands and Changes It’s Name And Here’s What It Means For You

The tech giant said it has changed its name to “Meta” to separate its work on new technologies from the Facebook social media platform. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced his company has changed its name to Meta.

The announcement came on Thursday (28 October) during a presentation that showcased Facebook’s work on virtual reality technologies. If  you have worked on Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp to build your brand or personal identity you sure will be interested to know about it, don’t worry here’s all the details that you need to know:

  1. Here’s what you need to know about the name “Meta” and how it came into existence: Meta is the new identity for the parent company name Facebook, as Facebook as name did not encapsulate everything that the company did, so the name of the social media app remains the Facebook as it is and the company will venture into further manufacturing and designing of new technologies under the company name “Meta”.

2. Zuckerberg said meta was “going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first”: Which means Facebook will no longer be the company’s main focus, instead, it will pour its resources into constructing virtual reality products. In the longer-term, Mr Zuckerberg said it would also mean people wouldn’t need to use Facebook to use the company’s other services.

3. What does Meta mean: Meta in Greek translates to “beyond” and here’s what Zuckerberg had to say about it  “For us it’s a story that started in the dorm room and grew beyond anything we could imagine into a family of apps that people use to find one another, to find their voice, to start businesses and communities and movements that have changed the world.

4. Why you should be excited about it: Metaverse already exists today through Meta-owned brand Oculus, which will itself be rebranded to Meta Quest in 2022, as well as Meta’s collaboration with glasses manufacturer Ray-Ban that allows users to see social media notifications via their glasses or sunglasses. In his presentation during the launch Mark Zuckerberg showed how his new metaverse concept ‘Horizon’ could apply to our future lives.Later Zuckerberg demonstrated how it could be used to hold realistic work meetings and help with education.
